Many households in the Netherlands choose this relatively cheap and sustainable way of heating. These pellets are automatically fed into the combustion chamber, making the system efficient and easy to use. In densely populated areas, this can lead to health problems such as asthma, bronchitis and cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"aanscherping-europese-regelgeving-TLwZqJEkCy\">Tightening European regulations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Union has set stricter standards for emissions from heating plants for climate policy purposes. The so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/NL\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32015R1189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ecodesign directive (EU 2015\/1189)<span class=\"wpil-link-icon\" title=\"Link refers to an external website\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 5px;\"><svg width=\"24\" height=\"24\" style=\"height:16px; width:16px; fill:#fc6703; stroke:#fc6703; display:inline-block;\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:svg=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><use href=\"#wpil-svg-outbound-6-icon-path\"><\/use><\/svg><\/span><\/a> sets requirements for the efficiency and emissions of pellet stoves, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since January 2022, only stoves with a certain energy efficiency class may be sold. Many older models do not meet these requirements and are therefore no longer allowed to be newly installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nationale-beleidsmaatregelen-en-gemeentelijke-verboden-TLwZqJEkCy\">National policies and municipal bans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some municipalities have now taken steps to restrict the use of wood-burning installations. For instance, cities such as Utrecht and Amsterdam are considering establishing zones where the use of wood or pellet stoves will be banned during periods of poor air quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, the Dutch government has indicated in its Climate Agreement that it wants to move towards a natural gas-free built environment. This means critically examining all forms of combustion - including biomass such as pellets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zal-er-daadwerkelijk-een-landelijk-verbod-komen-TLwZqJEkCy\">Will there actually be a nationwide ban?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, there is no official nationwide ban on the use or sale of <strong>pellet stoves in the Netherlands<\/strong>. However, it is wise to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regular maintenance<\/strong> implement to reduce emissions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ecodesign-compliant models<\/strong> to be used;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/en\/duurzame-energie-subsidies\/\">Grants for sustainability<\/a> to keep an eye on;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform themselves about municipal regulations around wood burning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"kritiek-op-een-mogelijk-verbod-belangenorganisaties-aan-het-woord-TLwZqJEkCy\">Criticism of possible ban: interest groups speak out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some interest groups such as the Dutch Biomass Energy Association (NVBE) point out that modern pellet systems are much cleaner than older wood-burning stoves.
