The disadvantages of a pellet stove<\/strong> eight real drawbacks<\/strong><\/em>: it needs electricity, it makes audible noise, it requires weekly maintenance, it heats up more slowly than gas, you need a dry storage space for the pellets, installation costs are on top of the price of the boiler, filling it creates dust, and an incorrectly sized boiler performs poorly on a consistent basis. It is this last point that is the cause of most disappointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sell pellet stoves. We\u2019re writing this article anyway, because the question is asked so often that the answer needs to be available somewhere. And we\u2019d rather it came from us than be a half-baked, incomplete version from someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disadvantage 1: it doesn\u2019t work without electricity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A pellet stove<\/a> It is an electric appliance. The auger feeds in pellets, the ignition resistor starts the fire and the fan regulates the combustion air. If there is a power cut, your heating will stop working, even if the tank is full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power consumption itself is low: around 100 watts during operation, and briefly 300 to 400 watts when igniting. Over the course of a season, this amounts to a few tens of euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where this is decisive:<\/strong> if the stove is your only source of heating, or if you experience frequent power cuts. There are pellet stoves<\/a> which operate without electricity (natural draught, gravity-fed), but which are less flexible in terms of control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disadvantage 2: it\u2019s not quiet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is what surprises buyers the most. You\u2019ll hear three sounds: the fan as a constant hum, the auger as a soft rattling every few seconds, and the pellets falling into the burner pot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people get used to it within a few days. In an open-plan living area where you watch television in the evening, or in a bedroom, it remains noticeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What helps:<\/strong> A heater that can operate at a lower setting is quieter. A correctly sized unit is therefore also a quieter unit. Units with a larger heat exchanger and a slower fan are noticeably quieter than the cheapest models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawback 3: there really is weekly maintenance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Disadvantage 4: it takes longer to heat up than gas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It takes fifteen to twenty minutes from a cold start to full heat: ignition, build-up, and the fan reaching operating temperature. A gas boiler does this in two minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who programmes the heater won\u2019t notice, as it simply switches on half an hour earlier. Anyone who wants the heating to come on spontaneously will have to get used to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disadvantage 5: you need storage space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A full pallet of pellets weighs approximately 975 kg and occupies a floor area of roughly 1.2 by 0.8 metres. It must be stored indoors in a dry place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone without a garage or storage room buys by the bag or by half a pallet and therefore consistently pays more per kilo. In a flat with no storage space, that is a genuine concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawback 6: installation costs are in addition to the cost of the appliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the drawback that is most often underestimated when comparing prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stove costing 1,500 euros can therefore easily cost 3,000 euros to install. Always ask for a quote for the whole job, not just for the appliance itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawback 7: filling it creates dust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even with good-quality pellets, there\u2019s a layer of sawdust at the bottom of every bag. When you empty the bag, it comes loose. You\u2019ll notice it in a newly furnished living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What helps:<\/strong> Certified pellets with a mechanical durability of at least 98 per cent crumble less. Empty the bag gently, leaving the final layer of sawdust inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawback 8: an incorrectly sized stove performs poorly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is not a drawback of the technology itself, but of the purchase, and it is the main cause of disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 12 kW stove in a living room that requires 6 kW has no choice but to run continuously at its lowest setting. A pellet stove is not designed for that. The result: incomplete combustion, a sluggish orange flame, soot on the glass, a lot of ash, a burner pot that quickly becomes clogged with soot, and higher fuel consumption than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who then reads online that pellet stoves<\/a> \u2018Requiring a lot of maintenance and producing a lot of ash\u2019 \u2013 this describes his own situation, whilst the problem actually lay with the sizing. Why do people get rid of their pellet stoves?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If we list the most frequently cited reasons, three of them keep cropping up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What\u2019s striking is that none of the three is about the fuel or the costs. In each case, it\u2019s about expectations that turned out to be wrong from the outset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Something that is often cited as a drawback, but isn\u2019t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cPellets have become expensive\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The 2022 peak affected the entire energy market. Historically, pellet prices have fluctuated less than those of gas or heating oil, as they follow the timber market. Furthermore, those who buy in the summer pay 10 to 20 per cent less than the winter price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cPellet stoves are to be banned\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Regulations are becoming stricter on emissions from appliances, not on the fuel itself. This mainly affects old wood-burning stoves and open fires. A modern pellet stove more than meets the current European ecodesign requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
